Return Of The Mack – Mark Morrison : THROWBACK THURSDAYS
The 1996 R&B hit “Return of the Mack” by Mark Morrison is this week’s Throwback Thursday.
I want to dedicate this week’s track to my Mum - Mrs Fancye.
Returrrnnn of the Mack owwww!! Oh my God!! Remember this classic track? “Return of the Mack” was the hit single from Mark Morrison’s 1996 album of the same name. The song is about Mark catching his woman cheating with another man, calling her out on it and then telling her and the world that the Daddy Mack, is back in the game baby…
Track Significance
This song reminds me of my Mum, she loved this track and his album it was always on heavy rotation in my family home. There is something very unique about Mark Morrison’s voice that grabbed people’s attention. To this day I can still hear my mother’s voice singing out “you liedddddddd to meeeee” and it always makes me laugh.
Who is Mark Morrison?
Mark Morrison is 39 years old, has Barbadian parents (holla Rihanna!) was born in Germany, lived in England then moved to Miami at a young age. THAT explains the crazy accent.
The first black male solo artist to reach #1 in the 1990s, his single, “Return of the Mack”, became a #1 or Top 10 hit in several European countries in 1996. The song peaked at #2 in the United States the following year.
In 1995, Mark Morrison had two hits before “Return of the Mack” titled “Crazy” and “Let’s Get Down” which were received quite well on the UK charts.
His debut album, also titled Return of the Mack, followed and became a multi-platinum success. It reached number four in the UK chart, and sold 3 million albums worldwide.
Mark Morrison is quite the bad boy and is no stranger with law enforcement. Check out his charges below:
- conviction for attempting to bring a firearm aboard an airliner;
- failed to appear in court on charges of possessing an offensive weapon;
- convicted of affray for his part in a brawl resulting in one fatality and sentenced to community service;
- incarcerated in Wormwood Scrubs for a year for paying a lookalike to perform his court-appointed community service in his stead, while Morrison himself went on tour;
- banned from driving for six months and fined £1,380 after twice being caught driving without a licence;
- arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and car theft;
- failed to appear in court to face the charges and a warrant was issued for his arrest;
- arrested and spent a night in custody after a fracas started when his medallion went missing;
- arrested for an assault in London.
Music Video
“Return of the Mack” looks like a lot of 90s R&B videos, hot girl, guy blinged out with jewellery and wearing a leather jacket.
Mark is suave and has got it together rolling around in his Mercedes in the rain reminiscing about good times with his girl. He co-incidentally spots her kissing on another man on his drive he expresses his hurt: ”you lied to me, even though you knew I’d die for you, you lied to me, yes I cried, yes I cried.”
Shots of what looks like a pet snake are shown, perhaps symbolising her being a snake with her behaviour? Then you see him wearing snake shoes…hmm…maybe it was a gift from her or even worse HER PET SNAKE and this was a revenge act. OoOp! Don’t cross the Mack - he may turn your pet into a pair of shoes (check his rap sheet, dude clearly doesn’t care too much for abiding by social norms, I’m just saying…) !!
Mr Morrison to get his groove back throws a party with his boys and guess who decides to show up? Little Miss Cheating Thing with Mr New Man.
He then proceeds to get his emo on and sing to her again about how his heart is broken but the Mack is on the come up and how he’s back in the game damn it!
She confronts him in what looks like his office, gives him some lame dialogue about him worrying about his big break and that she needs a real man. At this point three Mark’s miraculously appear and sing in unison about his emotions with a few owws! arm flailings, looks of feigned “whatevs I’m not hurting” added for good measure – after which she promptly leaves.
I love the kicks he gives in this video whenever he says “watch my flow” it’s so damn extra.
Lyrics
Return Of The Mack
Mark Morrison
Oh, oo-o-oh, come on, ooh, yeah
Well I tried to tell you so (yes, I did)
But I guess you didn’t know, as I said the story goes
Baby, now I got the flow
‘Cos I knew it from the start
Baby, when you broke my heart
That I had to come again, and show you that I’m real
(You lied to me) all those times I said that I love you
(You lied to me) yes, I tried, yes, I tried
(You lied to me) even though you know I’d die for you
(You lied to me) yes, I cried, yes, I cried
1-(Return of the Mack) it is
(Return of the Mack) come on
(Return of the Mack) oh my God
(You know that I’ll be back) here I am
(Return of the Mack) once again
(Return of the Mack) pump up the world
(Return of the Mack) watch my flow
(You know that I’ll be back) here I go
So I’m back up in the game
Running things to keep my swing
Letting all the people know
That I’m back to run the show
‘Cos what you did, you know, was wrong
And all the nasty things you’ve done
So, baby, listen carefully
While I sing my come-back song
2-(You lied to me) ‘cos she said she’d never turn on me
(You lied to me) but you did, but you do
(You lied to me) all these pains you said I’d never feel
(You lied to me) but I do, but I do, do, do
(Return of the Mack) here it is
(Return of the Mack) hold on
(Return of the Mack) don’t you know
(You know that I’ll be back) here I go
(Return of the Mack) oh little girl
(Return of the Mack) wants my pearl
(Return of the Mack) up and down
(You know that I’ll be back) round and round
(rpt 2, 1)
(You know that I’ll be back) don’t you know
(Return of the Mack) here it is
(Return of the Mack) hold on
(Return of the Mack) be strong
(You know that I’ll be back) here I go
(Return of the Mack) my little girl
(Return of the Mack) wants my pearl
(Return of the Mack) up and down
(You know that I’ll be back) round and round
