Where Have You Been – Rihanna: MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW

Where Have You Been Rihanna

Rihanna’s “Where Have You Been” video has finally dropped – and it is everything I expected and more.

As I have previously stated - I have been highly anticipating the “Where Have You Been” music video release since I was sadly disappointed with the lacklustre delivery care of (or lack of care) Drake and Rihanna’s “Take Care.”

When I heard she was taking visual inspiration from the  practice of voodoo, West Indian and African culture and doing choreography I was almost in pre-emptive full stan mode…

Visuals

The opening and ending water scenes are EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING. The way that girl is submersed in water and looking all sexy – sis is straight channelling those water sirens and mermaids that tempt sailors to their watery doom.

Rihanna switches scenes and transports to Africa draped in colourful garbs and zebra print –  fireside with delicious shirtless backup dancers. There she proceeds to – yes wait for it- DANCE, not wine, dance. Rih is chest popping and moving her body in ways I have not seen her or frankly anybody do before. Some of the moves very much seem culturally derived  – especially the footwork.

Girl you KNOW I’m a sucker for watching people engage and express their culture – it’s their identity and culture is strength. Ahhh - “Rude Boy” STILL gives me life.

Next thing you know Rihanna is in what looks like a voodoo hut – dressed in a black tight lace dress and rocking big curls, chunky bracelets and hoop earrings accompanied by all female dancers. I see your makeup girl, pink eyeshadow, smokey eyes and feature brows I predict that’s gonna pop up on YouTube soon as a  ‘how-to’ tutorial.

The dance move with the collective eye formation was so damn good and she integrates the African arm swing and leg movement made popular in pop culture by Beyonce in the “De Ja Vu” music video shot at Oak Alley Plantation in Louisiana (I’ve been there, just saying…). But this time, she adds fire!

I really enjoyed the female choreography – I felt it was really powerful.

The mood of the last half of the video was eerie and everything I love about the Hollywood appropriation of voodoo – smoke, darkness, trees.

The Verdict

The wardrobe team for “Where Have You Been” should be commended on the outfits they put together - Rihanna looked particulary stunning in her Queen of the Damned get up with head dress and the intricate gold star sequins placed all over her face to form a mask. There is a lot of detail in each of her outfits each piece seems strategically selected.

Now I already know that people are going to compare Rihanna’s dancing in “Where Have You Been” to the likes of the dancing diva greats - Beyonce, Janet and Ciara – however I feel that is an unfair comparison. Those ladies are truly blessed with the gift of dance and not everyone can create eternally memorable signature dance moves and quite frankly this expectation of dance greatness is generally only one that extends to female artists – a double standard.

I highly commend Rihanna on her hard work practicing to dance all through “Where Have You Been” knowing full well it was not one of her strengths, but she sought to improve it and prove to all those haters out there that she is one of the hardest working R&B/pop artists out there today – who is well and truly worthy of praise.

For me, this video is up there as one of my favourite Rihanna music videos of all time.

I think she’s really challenged herself here – and her choice of drawing inpsiration from her West Indian and Bajan culture/heritage was clearly a great choice for her. I always love when she shows the world snippets of her culture – her ethnicity and pride in being Bajan – and that’s what makes Rihanna so unique as an artist there isn’t anyone else in the Billboard Top 40 that has her sound, her look, her heritage.

“Where Have You Been” is everything we needed from you Rihanna. Werkkkkkkk bish!

Thank you and I hope you bring us more videos of this quality!

Pat de cake and cut de cake Rihanna!

Lyrics

“Where Have You Been”

Rihanna

[Rihanna]
I’ve been everywhere, man
Looking for someone
Someone who can please me
Love me all night long
I’ve been everywhere, man
Looking for you babe
Looking for you babe
Searching for you babe

Where have you been
Cause I never see you out
Are you hiding from me, yeah?
Somewhere in the crowd

[Hook]
Where have you been,
All my life, all my life
Where have you been, all my life
Where have you been, all my life
Where have you been, all my life
Where have you been, all my life

[Beat Break]

[Rihanna]
I’ve been everywhere, man
Looking for someone
Someone who can please me
Love me all night long
I’ve been everywhere, man
Looking for you babe
Looking for you babe
Searching for you babe

Where have you been
Cause I never see you out
Are you hiding from me, yeah?
Somewhere in the crowd

[Hook]
Where have you been,
All my life, all my life
Where have you been, all my life
Where have you been, all my life
Where have you been, all my life
Where have you been, all my life

[Beat Break]

Where have you been, all my life

[Bridge]
You can have me all you want
Any way, any day
To show me where you are tonight

[Outro]
I’ve been everywhere, man
Looking for someone
Someone who can please me
Love me all night long
I’ve been everywhere, man
Looking for you babe
Looking for you babe
Searching for you babe
