I’ve been caught by Jess in her latest release“Gotcha.”
Jessica Mauboy, R&B artist, our gorgeous Australian Aboriginal sista and runner up of 2006 Australian Idol has released a sexy new single titled “Gotcha” to feature on the soundtrack to the blockbuster and Cannes acclaimed new film “The Sapphires.”
The film is a true story and depicts the lives of three young Aboriginal women who travel to Vietnam in 1968 specifically to entertain the troops as a singing Motown group to rival The Supremes. I am highly anticipating seeing this film which is released nationwide in cinemas across Australia this week. The film stars my favourite Aussie actress Deborah Mailman who has successfully managed to dispel typecasting as a black female actress starring in films, musicals, and television in a multitude of genres.
Mauboy is one of those rare artists that will never sell out – she sings about topics she seemingly wants to, pulls amazing collaborations ie. Snoop Dogg, Ludacris and her image is sexy – but effortlessly so – without showing off all her assets. She’s quietly confident and a natural beauty.
“Gotcha” is packed full of sass and is a modern Motown sounding track.
The music video depicts scenes from the film, her wardrobe showcasing the signature 60s/70s shift dress.
I will be going to see her when she comes to my city for a club gig in coming weeks – I have seen her perform several times over the years and each time I am blown away by her stage presence and vocal ability.
When I look at Jess I feel such black pride. It’s a rare thing for us to have a black, local R&B talent in the mainstream charts in Australia. It’s a very tough industry for our local mob to crack – but Jess’ formula somehow translates into mass appeal having featured on the music charts and stayed in the game for nearly six years to date.
[FUN BEAUTY FACT] Jessica Mauboy’s favourite M.A.C lipstick is Ruby Woo.
