Halftime Show at the Superbowl is always a show I look forward to and in 2015 Katy Perry stole the show with a small cameo from Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz.
It wasn’t surprising that Katy Perry was chosen as the Superbowl halftime show entertainer – in fact, it would have been insulting if she hadn’t been given the critically acclaimed rave reviews from last year’s world Prismatic Tour. One thing is for certain – the girl can put on a damn good show having seen her live last year.
Each year there is pressure for the incoming artist to outperform last year’s show – if Katy was worried, it didn’t show. The 2015 Halftime Show was an absolute cracker with Perry taking the stage on a large tiger or lion to the aptly chosen track “Roar.”
She then belted out one of my personal faves “Dark Horse” on a giant chess board with chess piece costumed dancers. How awesome was the tilted chess board effect?!
I love me some Kravitz so I was pleasantly surprised when Lenny came onstage to perform her first big single “I Kissed A Girl.”
As per her Prismatic World Tour there were props a plenty (beach themed) on the next blended track of “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls.” Bright, colourful and iconically Katy it was a visual feast.
Missy Elliott took the stage with Perry to perform “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” and “Lose Control.” Predictably she bought out her dancers and she was wearing her signature baggy clothes. The reviews of the halftime show are out and some are saying that Missy Elliott stole the show from Katy Perry – well I respectfully disagree. She’s been off the music scene since I was a teenager (and I understand that much of this is due to her having Graves’ disease) and I didn’t think her performance was any different or better than what I would have seen her bring when the songs were initially released. In fact I’d go as far as saying it was forgettable. Although I am a fan of the rapper I just felt it was a strange and surprising addition to the colourful pop show.
Perry finished the show with a bang performing “Firework”on an elevated star above the stadium while colourful fireworks dotted the sky. It was a high energy show with a motivating setlist and the resounding roar of applause and singing from the crowd suggested to me they loved it too.
